Barberton TVET Student Family Seeks Justice For Fatal Shooting

Barberton TVET Student Family Seeks Justice For Fatal Shooting. The family of a Barberton TVET College student who was tragically shot and killed during a Fresher’s Ball event in Mpumalanga over the weekend is demanding justice. The incident, which left two other students wounded, has raised serious concerns about safety and accountability at the college.

Details Of The Incident

The victim, 23-year-old Bandile Bhisha, was an electrical engineering student at Barberton TVET College. The suspect, a 24-year-old man known to Bhisha, allegedly opened fire on students and patrons at the event, resulting in Bhisha’s death and injuries to two other students. The suspect has since been arrested and is expected to appear in court to face charges related to the incident.

Family Plea For Justice

Bhisha’s grandmother, Zodwa Sibande, has expressed deep grief and frustration over the handling of the incident by the college authorities. She accused the college of not being transparent about the circumstances surrounding her grandson’s death. According to Sibande, the college initially asked her to clean up the blood at the scene, and later started spreading rumors that the shooting occurred outside the campus.

“I am very hurt by what happened. I am emotionally drained. What hurts me the most is that I was told to come and clean the blood where he was killed inside the school. After that, they started rumors saying he was killed outside the campus,” Sibande said.

The Suspect And Arrest

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Donald Mdhluli reported that the suspect was initially refused entry to the event because he was not a student and had not paid the R50 entrance fee. After leaving, the suspect allegedly returned and fired shots at the crowd, resulting in Bhisha’s death and injuries to two others.

Mdhluli explained, “A case of murder with other two counts of attempted murder was opened on the same Saturday. They arrested a 24-year-old man, and he’s going to appear in court on Tuesday in Barberton, facing those charges.”

College Response

The Barberton TVET College management has declined to comment on the incident, which has only fueled the frustration and demand for answers from the victim’s family and the student community.

Injured Students’ Condition

The two students who were injured in the shooting have since been discharged from the hospital. Their recovery offers a small relief amid the ongoing grief and quest for justice for Bhisha’s family.

Conclusion

The tragic shooting at Barberton TVET College has left a family mourning and a community questioning the safety and accountability of the institution. As the suspect faces charges in court, Bhisha’s family hopes to see justice served, ensuring that the tragic loss of their loved one is not in vain.
