In celebration of Mandela Day, Ehlanzeni TVET College took a significant step to make a difference in their community by visiting the Mbombela Drop-In Centre. This initiative aimed to support the local children and enhance the facilities at the centre. With the help of sponsors and partners, the college prepared land for tree planting, donated essential equipment, and provided food for the children.

Making A Difference On Mandela Day

On Thursday, July 18, Ehlanzeni TVET College visited the Mbombela Drop-In Centre as part of their Mandela Day project. This center assists 71 children from the community with their homework, teaches life skills, provides lunch, and does their laundry. The college’s involvement brought much-needed resources and support to the center.

Contributions From Ehlanzeni TVET College

Gugu Matthews, the deputy principal of innovation and development at Ehlanzeni TVET College, highlighted the college’s commitment to supporting Mandela Day and making a meaningful impact. The initiative was inspired by students who identified the centre while working on a school assignment.

Key Contributions

  1. Land Preparation for Tree Planting: In collaboration with their partners, Internship Success, the college prepared land for planting trees.
  2. Donation of Equipment: The college donated six computers, chairs, two tables, and cupboards.
  3. Food Donations: Ehlanzeni TVET College provided food for lunch, and SPAR donated additional food for the children.

Future Projects And Support

The college’s support for the Mbombela Drop-In Centre extends beyond Mandela Day. Matthews mentioned that there are ongoing projects aimed at improving the centre’s facilities. A company has volunteered to assist with the installation of additional toilets, increasing the current number from one to four. There is also hope that a donor will come forward to install a ceiling, which would help the centre achieve accreditation.

The Impact Of The Drop-In Centre

Molinah Malebana, a representative of the centre, shared insights into its daily operations. The centre is open from Monday to Friday, providing a safe and supportive environment for children who might otherwise lack assistance at home. The centre’s journey began when the community recognized the need to support children who stayed home with their grandmothers. Initially, they met under a tree until the Mdluli Trust provided a building.

Community Gratitude

Malebana expressed profound gratitude for the support received from Ehlanzeni TVET College and its partners. She emphasized the positive impact of the donations and the difference they made in the children’s lives. “We are happy to see the people who came out to make a difference for the children, and we want to thank them for everything,” Malebana said.

Conclusion

Ehlanzeni TVET College’s visit to the Mbombela Drop-In Centre on Mandela Day exemplifies the spirit of community support and giving back. Their contributions have significantly enhanced the centre’s resources and facilities, providing a better environment for the children. This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and the lasting impact it can have on local communities.
