Agricultural Careers Summit Hosted by Ehlanzeni TVET College

Agricultural Careers Summit Hosted by Ehlanzeni TVET College. The Ehlanzeni TVET College in partnership with AgriSETA, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD), and the Office of the Premier in Mpumalanga Province successfully organized a Career Summit on February 25, 2025.
At the Arconhoek Mapulaneng Campus, this pivotal event underscored the importance of career development, especially in agriculture. As a result of this initiative, the College continues to provide students with essential insights into promising career paths and opportunities.
Empowering Students with Career Guidance
The Career Summit attracted 500 students from grades 10 to 12. Students explored diverse career pathways in agriculture and related fields through interactive exhibitions and career guidance sessions. Hands-on learning aligns with Ehlanzeni TVET College’s commitment to providing accessible career development services and fostering a well-informed student community.
NSDP 2030 aims to bridge the gap between education and industry by connecting learners with higher education institutions, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and key agricultural employers. A comprehensive approach to career exploration and workforce development was also provided by local agricultural colleges and TVET institutions.
Strengthening Agricultural Education and Training
Ehlanzeni TVET College principal, Mr. E.M. Mbuyane, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting agriculture careers. Mashishing and Mthimba campuses offer specialized programs in Primary Agriculture and Farming Management, making agricultural education more accessible to aspiring professionals and community members.
Collaborative Efforts to Transform Education
AgriSETA and DALRRD should work together in a more collaborative manner with Ehlanzeni TVET College, according to MEC C. Dlamini of the Mpumalanga Department of Basic Education. For students interested in careers in agriculture, she stressed the importance of integrating academic institutions with industry-driven training.
MEC Dlamini highlighted several key areas of focus in her address:
- Critical Fields for Growth: Job creation, economic growth, and poverty reduction are all driven by agriculture and civil engineering.
- Current Challenges: Given Mpumalanga’s rich agricultural heritage and large youth population, declining interest in agricultural careers is concerning.
- Educational Initiatives: 22 Agricultural Schools and the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science, and Technology Academy aim to enhance subject proficiency in Agricultural Science, Mathematics, and Physical Science.
- Changing Perceptions: Building partnerships with TVET colleges, AgriSETA, and stakeholders will dispel outdated notions that success is solely a white-collar endeavor.
- Leveraging Digital Platforms: Through social media and digital outreach, the initiative aims to engage and inspire young individuals to consider careers in agriculture and engineering.
