Deputy Minister to Visit TVET College Following Rapes of Four Students

Deputy Minister to Visit TVET College Following Rapes of Four Students. Buti Manamela, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, will visit Tlharihani TVET College in Mamaila, Limpopo, following the tragic rape of four students.

Disturbing Incident at TVET College

On Saturday, a suspect entered the student residence, found eight students, and raped four of them at gunpoint. Along with the assault, the suspect robbed the victims of their money and mobile phones.

An investigation has been launched, and TVET colleges need to beef up security to ensure student safety.

Government Response to Campus Security

The government has committed to improving the security of student residences following the tragedy, said Deputy Minister Buti Manamela. Measures will be taken to improve safety protocols across higher education institutions, he assured the public.

“The college will fully cooperate with the police to apprehend the perpetrator and we will work with the institution to ensure proper support is provided to the students,” Manamela said.

As part of a broader effort to monitor campus security, student accommodation, and the registration process at institutions across Limpopo, the Department of Higher Education and Training visited Tlharihani TVET College.

Expanding Higher Education in South Africa

Manamela also stated that the government was planning to broaden higher education access in the long run as well as address immediate safety concerns.

  • Two new universities are being developed:
    • University of Science and Technology
    • Police University
  • The government plans to build 10 new TVET colleges in the next five years.
  • In order to accommodate more students, universities are encouraged to expand their online programs.

“Students should explore all the post-school options available rather than focusing only on universities,” Manamela emphasized.

Conclusion

There is a pressing need for enhanced security measures at student residences following the horrific attack at Tlharihani TVET College. Aside from providing support for victims, the Deputy Minister will ensure institutional cooperation with law enforcement, and reinforce the government commitment to expanding safe, accessible education.
